11:15 to 12:45 – A Conversation with legendary editor Walter Murch, ACE & Award-Winning Writer/Director Alexander Payne
Join acclaimed film editor Walter Murch, ACE (nine Academy Award nominations and three wins, ACE Career Achievement award) in a discussion about his new documentary, Her Name Was Moviola, which tells the story of the early days of editing. Almost every film made in Hollywood from the mid-1920’s until the mid 1990’s was edited on a Moviola. Back then editing was highly external — every aspect of the process was a broad physical gesture in space and time. A bin is physically a bin, a splice is physically a splice, and you must physically rewind using muscle power to get from the end of a reel back to the beginning, and so on. The conversation will be led by renowned writer, director and producer known for the films Sideways (2004), The Descendants (2011), Nebraska (2013), and The Holdovers (2023), among many others.
