HELLO EDITORS!
Hello editors from far and wide. Welcome to the 2023 television issue of CinemaEditor! As always there’s a lot to report from ACE headquarters. ACE’s Annual Meeting was held on June 3rd. It was so great to see everyone – there is truly nothing better than a room full of editors. And a roomful we had – including 31 new members! The enthusiastic applause from the rest of the membership as we welcomed them into ACE was truly touching.
We were also lucky to hear from this year’s ACE interns Daniela Bond and Alyssa Hance on what the internship has meant to them (which you can read about in this issue). It was a wonderful afternoon all the way around. Thank you to Adobe for sponsoring the event and the ACE Internship Program.
In some Committee news: The Connect Committee with its goal of keeping our retired life members active in our organization hosted its first luncheon with Richard Chew, ACE (Star Wars, The Conversation, Risky Business). Four of our lucky members (chosen randomly) sat down with Richard, had some great
food and talked for hours about his incredible career.
The afternoon was a huge success. Thank you to Mario’s Restaurant and PacPost for sponsoring this important happening. And keep your eyes peeled for the next lunch honoring the one and only Frank Urioste, ACE! The New York Committee is wrapping up their first season of “American Cinema Editors Presents” at Metrograph in NYC. The series has been an enormous success with sold out screenings followed by deep dive discussions with the ACE editors of Captain Fantastic, The Witch and The Ice Storm, to name a few.
The Education Committee has been busy as well. If you’re an educator or an ACE member interested in volunteering your time – check out the ACE Visiting Editors Program on our website. It’s been spiffed up and updated. Plus, the Education Committee itself will be representing ACE at this year’s University Film & Video Association Conference in July. It’s a great opportunity to raise ACE’s visibility with university and college educators from around the country.
In other big news, EditFest returns! Mark Aug. 26 on your calendars! Our good friends at Disney will once again host the live portion of our event and part two will be held virtually on Sept. 30. Panel discussions are being developed including one on AI and how it will affect our chosen profession. Now that’s going to be interesting! If you love editing – EditFest is for you. So get your tickets now!
And there’s more news and goodies inside with articles and interviews with the top editors from today’s hottest shows. Editors like Richie Edelson and Sarah Zeitlin from Abbott Elementary; Molly Shock, ACE, from MasterChef; and Nat Fuller, Jordan Kim, Harry Yoon, ACE, and Laura Zempel, ACE, from the hit Beef. You can read about Schmigadoon! with precision cutters Liza Cardinale, ACE, and Matthew Freund; The Bear, with Joanna Naugle, ACE, and Adam Epstein, ACE; and Weird, with Jamie Kennedy, ACE.
And finally, as CinemaEditor goes to print we are moving into our second month of the writers’ strike. Hopefully by the time this copy arrives in your mailbox the issues at stake will have been resolved in a fair and equitable way. Till then keep an eye out for your fellow editors who may be out of work. Reaching out with a simple phone call, meeting for a coffee or lunch can mean a lot. Be bold and be brilliant!
