Welcome to the current issue of CinemaEditor, in which we look back on an awards season like no other, as well as get a taste of some of the most exciting television/ streaming content that we watched this past year. In our cover story, we take a look at the much-anticipated In the Heights, Jon M. Chu’s feature adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s popular stage musical, edited by the masterful Myron Kerstein, ACE. To celebrate thefilm’s release and the whole idea of us going back into theaters, our veryown ACE Art Director Luci Zakhary created four unique covers from thefilm. Check ‘em out, collect them, trade them but mostly enjoy them!]
As most of you know, the 71st annual ACE Eddie Awards were held virtually on April 17. How much fun was that? Believe it or not we had over 1,000 guests from 21 countries that logged in to watch, mingle, network and ‘dance’ – all while celebrating this year’s Eddie nominees and winners, including Alan Baumgarten, ACE, whose work on The Trial of the Chicago 7 won Best Edited Dramatic Feature; Matthew Friedman, ACE, and Andrew Dickler for Palm Springs (Best Edited Comedy Feature); and Kevin Nolting, ACE for Soul (Best Edited Animated Feature Film); along with television category winners such as Trevor Ambrose, CCE (Schitt’s Creek), Melissa McCoy (Ted Lasso), Chris McCaleb, ACE, and Joey Liew (Better Call Saul), Cindy Mollo, ACE (Ozark) and Michelle Tesoro, ACE (The Queen’s Gambit). Congratulations to all of this year’s nominees and winners, as well as Career Achievement Award recipients Lynzee Klingman, ACE, and Sidney Wolinsky, ACE, and Golden Eddie honoree Spike Lee.
Congratulations and huge thanks to ACE Executive Director Jenni McCormick and our ACE staff; Jessica Whitney at ZOe Productions; and all the volunteers involved in the Herculean effort of producing the remote Eddies. It was huge success and a show to remember!
ACE also aims to keep everyone connected – safely – through our new weekly e-newsletter. Thank you Jenni for another great idea from you and the team. It’s lots of fun and loaded with links to articles and interviews with today’s top editors. Not to mention invites to social gatherings (virtually for now) and the “Clip of the Week” where ACE members submit a favorite scene from film or television that inspires them.\
Watch for updates regarding our ACE Annual Meeting, which will be held in June. We’ll be holding it again virtually and this year combining it with our first ever “Committee Fair” – conceived and organized by Board members Sabrina Plisco, ACE, and Troy Takaki, ACE – where members can discuss, explore, create and join our various ACE committees. Don’t be shy! Get involved.
As we ship this issue, it seems more of our members and the filmmaking community are getting back to work, which is obviously great news! We at ACE will keep you up to date and share any information we have as our industry moves forward during this time. And remember, if you have something you’d like to share, please reach out: We want to hear from you.
Enjoy this issue of CinemaEditor and please stay safe and continue to look after each other.
– KEVIN TENT, ACE
